Moving On

Updated: Sep 2

We've always heard the saying, "Leave the past behind and forge ahead" when we're ready to move on in life, however, I don't know if we want to leave everything behind, because if we did, we would probably be missing some important stuff. Even if we're leaving mistakes, regrets, or just a bad situation all together, we can recognize, and should recognize that everything that happened can serve a purpose if we let it, and that purpose is something we will want to bring with us.

There's no doubt that it's healthy and wise to leave unhealthy situations or circumstances that no longer serve the life we're looking for, however, as we heal and begin moving in a different direction, it's important to remember that what we've learned from these experiences is teaching us more of who we are, what we need, and how to get it. Past experiences can help us recognize truth, value our self-worth, give us courage, and gain resilience, among other things. This is a big deal and useful when making new decisions and paving a new path. Although, I'm sure most of us would rather not have to learn these lessons the hard way, there's no doubt that the past has been a part of forming us into who we are today, and it is up to us to decide if we are going to let it turn our life into something that's much more extraordinary, or if we are going to let it keep us stuck... forever living in the land of regret and sorrow.

I pray we all choose to move forward and be proud of ourselves for, first of all, making it out, and then becoming courageous enough to keep moving forward. Dr Ramini Durvasula explains this in her book It's Not You by saying, "Shaping your story along the hero's journey framework transforms your perception of your healing process from someone who is dragging themselves out of a mess to a person who took one hell of a treacherous trip".

As we leave the bad, pack up the good, and store away what we've learned for the future, we can be comforted in knowing that as we continue on things can only get better, and brighter days are sure to be found on the horizon...
