How Far We've come

It's interesting how most of us go through life searching for the life that's uniquely ours. We all want a life that feels true to us, where we can be ourselves, have support, and live our purpose. So why does this seem so hard to find? I would say it's because we're trying to fit into a life that's not made for us.
I'll admit, I did this in my 20's as I was starting out on my own... not because I was trying to follow someone else's ideas of what I was suppose to be doing, I was just doing what I'd been taught, however, what I'd been taught was to follow what everyone else was doing. This didn't go well for me, and years later I ended up leaving a culture that didn't fit my values or sit well with my integrity, and ending a marriage for the same reasons. I found, in the end, following what everyone else was doing didn't work. It wasn't until I gave in to following my own internal compass that I found what was right for me.
After all these years I've learned that the only way to find the life that's meant for us is to follow our OWN inner voice and we'll never be able to do this by following someone else's ideas, values, or beliefs. This is sometimes hard to do because it's easier to follow those who seem to know the way. It feels scary and sometimes lonely to head off on our own, but I promise, if you get the courage to do this, you won't be alone, you'll find others who are doing the same thing and they'll be the ones that will become your people and your support group. On the other hand, if we follow others just because it's what we've been taught, we'll never find our path and our inner compass will never become our guiding force.
This is a work in progress and it takes practice. It means listening instead of talking, gathering information before coming to conclusions, accepting reality, using critical thinking, researching, observing before responding, reflecting, becoming self aware, and most importantly consulting the knowing within. When we get still, sit with the information we've gathered, and look inward, the answers will come. We'll know what's the right thing for us because it feels true and brings peace.
No one else can tell us the answers for our own lives, it's not until we let go of everything else and look inward that things will fall into place. I had to learn this lesson the hard way and now that I know the secret I can tell you this; life is never easy, however these days, instead of feeling confusion, anxiety, and fear as I head out into the unknown, I find love, joy, peace and purpose...
