Purpose in the Process

Updated: 4 days ago

In retrospect, I realize that a significant portion of my life has been spent in a state of waiting—waiting to heal, waiting for life to improve, and waiting for life to progress. Throughout this journey, I discovered that the pace of change is often excruciatingly slow. There were moments when it felt as though my circumstances would never change, however, I have come to understand that, indeed, things do improve, and life does eventually move forward. More importantly, I have recognized that this waiting period often fosters a profound transformation within us.

As we navigate through life, many of us come to understand that reflecting on our mistakes, challenges, and obstacles reveals valuable lessons learned and personal growth achieved. We gain deeper insights into our desires, needs, and core values, which empower us to make necessary changes and informed decisions for the future. Yet, it often seems that this clarity becomes most apparent only after we have endured difficult times and found more stable ground. Wouldn't it be helpful if we could recognize our growth during the struggle itself? By doing so, we may cultivate greater patience, calmness, and awareness of who we're becoming.

With this perspective, I have been consciously focusing on the lessons I can learn while waiting for life to unfold, as well as moving forward one step at a time. This practice has allowed me to slow down, embrace the process, and gain clarity. I also remind myself that research indicates it can take approximately three years—or even longer—for life to feel "normal" again following a crisis or significant life change.

When we find ourselves navigating a challenging season that appears endless, it is essential to pause and reflect on what we might be learning during this time. By taking a moment to step back, we can gain insights that may have otherwise gone unnoticed, allowing us to adopt a broader perspective. The lessons we learn are likely preparing us for future experiences and shaping us into who we are meant to be. While this journey demands patience, it also offers a reassuring sense that we are being cared for—ensuring we are healed, comforted, loved, and ready to move forward.

Nature provides a powerful metaphor for this transformation: when caterpillars enter their cocoons, they undergo a profound metamorphosis, breaking down into a liquid state and rearranging their DNA, changing them completely. Eventually, they emerge as beautiful butterflies. It is crucial to remind ourselves that it is not only acceptable but sometimes essential to remain in our own cocoons for a time, allowing for the necessary growth. When we finally emerge we will see our own transformation and, like the caterpillar, we will find we too have grown wings.
