With springtime upon us we're beginning to see new life budding all around. In almost every culture, spring is the symbol of new birth and new beginnings. It has certainly been a season of new beginnings for me and I'm grateful, more than ever, for a chance at this.
Looking back, however, it's interesting how we sometimes hold on to things for dear life when what we really need is a change. It's hard to see it when we're in the eye of the storm so we find ourselves fighting with all that we have to keep things the same, even if it's not good for us or what we need. It seems that God, or the Universe, or whatever you want to call it, is trying to tell us to just let go, but it's too hard to imagine our life any other way. Because we can't see the forest for the trees, it feels impossible and wrong to just let go.
However, Martha Beck says, "If we resist we still lose things but we don’t let good things be born. When we stop resisting and allow the in and out of the tides of life, grief comes in and a new birth happens, then we find an amazing world that we never knew existed."
I know in my life when everything's been thrown into chaos and I'm trying desperately to keep it all under control, I notice taking a step back and looking at the big picture helps me recognize when I'm trying to hold on to something that's not working, and isn't good for me. That's when I have to let go and find my way to something new, trusting that this something new will, not only be better for me, but will be more aligned with who I am and how my life should be. I'm beginning to see glimpses of this already in this new life and I'm in awe at how quickly things can fall into place once we're finally headed in the right direction. I think our inner compass is continuously trying to keep us on the right path by showing us truths and guiding us away from hazards, but we will never get to where we need to be and find our new beginning without first Letting Go....
